If you are living with diabetes, looking after your feet is more important than many people realise. Even small issues can become serious if they are not picked up early.
At our Darwin clinic, we often see preventable foot problems that could have been managed sooner with the right care and advice.

Diabetes can impact both circulation and nerve function
Nerve damage resulting in loss of sensation in the feet

Poor blood circulation can delay wound healing
Increased susceptibility to bacterial and fungal infections

At home tips for Diabetic Foot Care
Inspect your feet daily to check for cuts, blisters, redness, swelling or any changes in the skin or nails.
Keep your feet clean and dry by washing your feet daily with mild soap and warm water. Dry thoroughly especially between the toes.
Apply moisturiser or heel balm around the heels to prevent cracks and fissures.
Do not apply moisturiser between the toes to prevent fungal infections.
Cut nails straight across and avoid cutting too short or rounding the corners.
Choose shoes that are of a correct fit and avoid going barefoot.
Keeping blood sugar levels under control.
